An overtime goal gave Long Beach
State a 1-0 win over Fresno State Wednesday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Fresno State has yet to win a home game this year.
After two scoreless halves, 49er freshman midfielder Kim Silos accepted
a pass from freshman Dana Farquhar and found the net with less than three
minutes remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period.
The ‘Dogs took eight shots over the 49ers’ six and Fresno
State goalkeeper Angie Larsen recorded two saves. Both teams took only
one shot in the seven minutes of overtime.
Scoreless regulation play consisted of intense physical match-ups, including
a total of 13 fouls committed by the 49ers; the ‘Dogs racked up
eight.
“We played hard and tackled hard but didn’t get the win,”
said head coach Steve Springthorpe. “We battled for 90 minutes but
it’s frustrating that we haven’t been able to score.”
Even though only four shots on goal were taken by the Bulldogs and three
by the 49ers, both teams were not without opportunity.
About seven minutes into the second half, Silos took a high shot saved
by Larsen only to come back minutes later with a shot just wide. Silos
had five shots, three on goal.
First half play ended with only four shots taken, three by the Bulldogs
with two of those coming off the foot of junior forward Cortney Sobrero.
Second half excitement came at about minute 25 when Silos scored off a
cross from Farquhar, but due to an offsides call, it was ruled no goal
and the scored remained 0-0.
The Bulldogs attacked at about the 75th minute mark after the 49ers’
Natalie Messina received a yellow card. Midfielder Erika Sugano connected
with Alison Sill to no avail. Sill earned two shots on goal.
“They are a good team and they’re on a roll,” Springthorpe
said. “They are getting it done.”
The ‘Dogs, who are now 3-6, were looking for a third straight win
after breaking a four-game losing streak.
The next match up will be against California State University, Bakersfield
at home on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
