The College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology is recognized by Fresno State for teaching, research and outreach programs in agriculture, food sciences, industrial technology and family sciences.

The Agricultural Ambassadors class is a big part of the outreach program and service learning component said Steve Rocca, class instructor and professor in Agricultural Education.

The main goals of the group are to promote: higher education, Fresno State, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and all of its majors and agricultural literacy by sending Fresno State students to actively recruit at high schools and community colleges surrounding the university.

Rocca said the presentation is designed to encourage other students to attend Fresno State to inform them of requirements for applying to Fresno State, to take a look at CAST; and to educate them on all the different types of majors within the college. He said Fresno State is one of only five California institutions that have agricultural programs and he wants potential students to be aware of that.

“Right now the group is made up of 32 diverse agricultural majors who meet on Monday nights at 6 p.m., but you don’t necessarily have to be in the major to participate,” Rocca said. “The purpose of the meetings is to promote student bonding and deal with the business of the group and develop and practice the presentation. One of the exercises we do is a Jeopardy type question and answer game about the presentation to better prepare the students.”

CAST Ambassadors also get hands-on experience through the University Farm Laboratory and the California Agricultural Technology Institute.
