Roxanne Sellick, a local product from Bullard High school, captured the overall women’s title with a time of 11:25, five seconds off the school’s freshman record by Mary Kuphaldt in 1986, in the 41st Annual Watermelon Run. The event, which takes place on campus, started on the corners of Cedar and Barstow and featured two open events with the men’s two-mile run at 8 a.m and the women’s two-mile run at 8:30 a.m.

Junior Zinzi Evans finished second overall in the women’s run with a time of 11:34. Both Sellick and Evans also broke into the school’s Top 25 all-time two-mile list. Sellick had the 15th-best time while Evans’ mark ranks 20th.

Fresno State also had four other ‘Dogs finish among the top 20 runners. Sophomore Marina Santana finished 13th overall with the time of 12:07. Junior Valeria Delgado placed 15th overall (12:13) while sophomore Patty Torres and freshman Paloma Dominguez finished 16th (12:14) and 18th (12:29) overall, respectively.

On the men’s side, Mikel Thomas finished first with a time of 9:36. Eloy Quintana came in second with a 9:40 time and Ernesto Rojas rounded out the top three male runners a second later. All three jumped into the Watermelon Run Top 10 men’s two-mile list as Thomas now ranks sixth, Quintana is eighth and Rojas is ninth.

Fresno State officially opens its season next Saturday at the CSU Fullerton Invitational. The 5K run will take place at Craig Regional Park.

Women’s Soccer loses close battle with Big West champs

Fresno State could not recover from two first-half scores by defending Big West Conference winner UC Santa Barbara as the Gauchos handed the Bulldogs a 2-1 defeat in the season opener on Friday for both teams at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs (0-1-0) held the edge in several shot categories, including a 9-3 advantage in shot attempts. Fresno State’s nine shot total was below its usual standard, although four attempts were on goal.

Fresno State was playing in its first home opener since Aug. 25, 2000, when it defeated Pepperdine 2-0.

Junior Cortney Sobrero, the Bulldog’s leading scorer in 2004, pulled Fresno State closer in the 68th minute, scoring off an assist from senior Kortney Lewis to make it 2-1.

Women’s Soccer gets revenge on Big West school

Two days after suffering a hard-fought 2-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara in its season opener, Fresno State (1-1) returned the favor against another Big West opponent in Cal State Northridge (1-1). Senior Kortney Lewis scored the game-winner in the 79th minute, giving the Bulldogs their first win of the year.

Cal State Northridge committed 11 fouls compared to Fresno State's seven.

Fresno State plays two more road matches next weekend. The Bulldogs face San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 2 and Sacramento State on Sunday, Sept. 4.

Volleyball prepares with intrasquad scrimmage

The Bulldogs had an intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 26 before heading on the road for nine straight matches. Fresno State will return for their regular home opener against Oregon on Sept. 16 at the North Gym.

The scrimmage provided a first look at many of the newcomers on the team, as eight of the nine newcomers received extended time during the two games. Among the returnees, Alisha McKee, Jessica Peterson and Mounia Nihipali led in kills during the short match. Nihipali also led her half of the squad in digs in the second match.

The Bulldogs will go to the Special Events Center next to take on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
