Health advocate will kick off University Lecture Series

Health advocate Art Ulene is expected to speak on Sept. 13 on “The Vitality Challenge: Prescription for Health.”


He will begin Fresno State’s 2005-06 University Lecture Series at the Satellite Student Union.


Ulene is the author of more than 50 books promoting good health, and has appeared on NBC’s Today program for 23 years. He has helped Americans with issues such as obesity, nicotine addiction, high blood pressure and women’s and children’s healthcare. His programs have included collaborations with the American Medical Association, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation and the American Academy of Family Physicians.


The lecture series will continue on Oct. 11 with director Sergio Arau and his wife, actress Yareli Arizmendi, the co-creators of “A Day without a Mexican.” Their lecture, “Making the Invisible Visible: The Task of the Artist,” will be in conjunction with the First Annual Diversity Conference, held the same day at Fresno State.


On Nov. 1, the English Department and the San Joaquin Literacy Association will welcome author Joyce Carol Oates.


On Feb. 7, 2006 the University Lecture Series will host Alfie Khon, who will speak about “Overhauling the Transmission Model.”


Dr. Patrick Moore will lecture on “Environmentalism in the 21st Century” on Feb. 28.


On April 4, Dr. Edward Diener will address the “Science of Happiness,” and ending the year on April 18 is Nouritza Matossian on the topic of “A Case of Mistaken Identity: Why Arshile Gorky changed his name.”

Programs will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union with free parking available in Lots J, O and P beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Season tickets are $50 general admission, $35 Fresno State faculty / staff / Alumni Association / seniors / other students and $10 for Fresno State students.  Individual tickets are $10 general admission, $6 Fresno State faculty / staff / Alumni Association / seniors / other students, and $2 for Fresno State students.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the University Student Union Information Desk.  Prices the day of the event increase by $2 for all buyers except Fresno State students.  For more information contact the University Lecture Series office at (559) 278-2341.
