Lake is new wrestling assistant coach


Kevin Lake will join head coach Shawn Charles in his first year with the Bulldogs. Prior to Fresno State, Lake spent last year as the assistant coach for South Dakota State and the year before at Princeton University.


Maymi named men’s tennis assistant coach


Sean Maymi will be assistant to head coach Jay Udwadia, who took over the men’s tennis program late last year.


Maymi is from The Racquet Club of Lake Bluff, Ill. where he served as the teaching professional while providing group and personal coaching. He has also served as the assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for four months in 2004.


Former Bulldog Bobby Jones is interim assistant baseball coach


Major league all-star and former Fresno State all-American Bobby Jones has been chosen to join the baseball coaching staff for the 2006 season as an interim assistant coach.


James is a member of the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame and Fresno State baseball Hall of Fame.


Women’s soccer’s Jagdeo named WAC preseason defensive player of the year; Bulldogs boast three all-WAC selections


Fresno State soccer was well-represented on this season’s 2005 preseason all-WAC team, leading the conference with three selections including junior Rochelle Jagdeo, the projected league defensive player of the year.


Junior forward Cortney Sobrero and junior midfielder Erika Sugano was also named on the list.


Sobrero, who was tabbed first-team all-WAC last year, lead the team with 10 goals and four assists.


Sugano scored her first career goal ad four of her career-high seven shots were on frame.

Men’s basketball schedule complete


Included on their 28-game schedule are 2005 NCAA tournament participants Iowa State (Dec. 3) and Pacific (Dec. 17). Both programs advanced to the NCAA second round.


The Western Athletic Conference season gets underway in early January.


Cross Country


The 41st Annual Watermelon Run kicks off the 2005 season for the Fresno State cross country team on Sat., Aug. 27. Ran on campus, starting at the corner of Cedar and Barstow, the open meet will have two events with the men’s two-mile run at 8:00 a.m. and the women’s two-mile run at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and the entry fee is $5.


Softball


Fresno State softball head coach Margie Wright has announced that former Bulldog All-American and three-time USA Softball Olympic gold medalist Laura Berg is re-joining her staff.


With the departure of 12-year assistant coach Mary Ivy, Berg returns for a second go-around after serving as an assistant coach to Wright from 2000-03. Berg had to step down from her full-time duties for the 2004 season in order to train full-time for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.


Berg played a pivotal role in guiding Fresno State to its first NCAA Division I national title in 1998.


Berg wrapped up her collegiate career by ranking among the NCAA all-time greats in NCAA Division I softball.


Pagel, Baptista named track and field assistant coaches


Fresno State director of track and field Bob Fraley adds two assistant coaches to his staff. Ramona Pagel has been named the men’s and women’s throws coaches while Chris Baptista will work with the women’s sprint and jumps teams and men’s and women’s hurdles.
