The Associated Students Senate elected Juan Pablo Moncayo as its executive vice president, in its first meeting held last June.

Moncayo defeated student government senator and one-time Fresno City Council candidate Michael Karbassi by a vote of seven to four.

Moncayo said one of his main goals as the executive vice president is to increase student participation in student government events.

He said he is planning to conduct a survey asking students about their views on the quality of services provided by the student government.

“I want to improve customer service,” Moncayo said.

In order for the student government to provide better service, Moncayo urged senators to interact more with students in their classrooms.

He said such interaction would create awareness of the services offered by the AS and increase the number of students taking advantage of its programs.

Moncayo said the student government also plans to make more use of the AS booth, located in the Free Speech Area, to reach out to students and increase the organization’s visibility.

Moncayo is a senior international student from Ecuador majoring in physics. Before his election, he served as an official of several organizations on campus, which include the Salsa Club and the Alcohol Advisory Student Subcommittee.

He also worked with the Social Norms Project, an organization that advises students on safe partying tips and responsible alcohol drinking behavior.

As executive vice resident, Moncayo’s duties will include running senate meetings and assigning senators to various university committees.
