Jamie Southern earned another honor after last week’s record-breaking
performances in the Fresno State softball team’s three-game sweep
of Tulsa.
Southern earned victories in all three games during the weekend series
at Bulldog Diamond.
After setting a new school and Western Athletic Conference record for
career wins, Southern was named the national player of the week. It’s
the second time this season, and third in her career, that Southern has
earned the honor.
“When you’re Jamie’s coach, you think she deserves the
honor every week,” Fresno State coach Margie Wright said in a news
release. “On and off the field, she is a hard working individual
who reaps the benefits because of her dedication.”
Record-breaking performances are nothing new to the senior All-America
pitcher.
She now has 109 wins in her career, ranking No. 17 in NCAA history. Southern
ranks eighth all-time with 72 career shutouts, 10th with 131 complete
games, 12th with 1,232 strikeouts, 19th with 1,021 and two-thirds innings
pitched, 20th with 137 starts and 29th with 8.4 strikeouts per seven innings.
“Growing up, I knew the history of the previous Bulldog pitchers,
and I just wanted to continue that tradition,” Southern said in
the release. “I wanted to continue their success. This award means
I’ve contributed to the team, the season and to the future of Bulldog
softball. It was nice to receive this award in the beginning of the year,
but to be recognized now is very special as my senior year is winding
down.”
Southern is 8-1 in her last 10 outings, with five shutouts, one save,
two earned runs, five walks and 73 strkeouts. She has a 0.24 ERA over
that span. Southern has a streak of 20 and one-third scoreless innings.
The Bulldogs (32-10, 8-1 WAC) are on the road the next two weekends. Fresno
State visits Louisiana Tech for three games tonight and Saturday before
visiting Nevada next weekend. The Bulldogs close the home schedule May
13 and 14 with three games against Texas-El Paso.
