Fresno State defends home field against Rhode Island

Staff Report / The Collegian

Four Fresno State pitchers got in on the action in Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island.

And not one of them gave up an earned run in either of the games — a 7-1 win and a 7-2 win.

Amanda Wolf started game 1 for the Bulldogs, giving up one unearned run and four hits in two and one-third innings.

Laura Ferreira entered the game in relief, getting the win by pitching four and two-thirds innings of one-hit softball and striking out seven.

Ferreira also chipped in with two-thirds of an inning of work in the second game, giving up one hit and getting her second win of the night to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Amanda Nesbitt got the start, going four and one-third innings and giving up two unearned runs on five hits. She struck out eight.

Pitching ace Jamie Southern, the three-time All-American, threw two innings in the nightcap, giving up no hits and striking out six.

The Bulldogs’ bats came through as well, starting with sophomore catcher Nichole Willis, who was 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs in the opener and 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run in game 2.

Junior shortstop Christina Clark and Southern each hit home runs in the second game. Both were 2 for 4. Clark went hitless in game 1.

In the first game, Fresno State broke the game open in the third inning. Willis singled up the middle before taking second base on a passed ball. Rachael Donaldson was hit by a pitch, but Willis then got thrown out trying to steal third. Kristin Sylvester drew a walk in the at-bat and Donaldson moved to third on a wild pitch.

With runners at the corners, Leticia Pacheco hit a triple to center field to score two and give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.

Pacheco was 2 for 4 in the game with two RBIs.

The Bulldogs next travel to Fullerton for the Kia Klassic, beginning Thursday.
