Fresno State loses 13-0 to San Francisco in Pepsi/Johnny Quik championship game

Staff Reports / The Collegian

Fresno State got a rematch against the only team it had lost to all week.

But the Bulldogs didn’t see any better results in Saturday’s 13-0 loss to San Francisco in the championship game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic at Beiden Field.

San Francisco pitcher Nick Pereira tossed a one-hitter against the Bulldogs on his way to earning tournament MVP honors.

The lone bright spot in the Bulldogs’ lineup was DeAndre Miller. The second baseman had the Bulldogs’ only hit and walked twice, setting a new tournament record with 10 walks during the week.

In the second inning, the Dons opened a three-run lead on a two-out rally. Fresno State freshman pitcher Brandon Burke retired the first two batters before giving up a double to Royce Fukoroku. Burke then hit Andrew Smith before Jonnie Knoble hit a two-run double. Tavo Hall followed with a single to put the Dons up 3-0.

Burke gave up six runs in four and one-third innings pitched.

Though that’s all the run support Pereira would need, Luke DeLong added some insurance in the ninth inning when he hit a grand slam off Fresno State freshman Carlos Luna.

Miller broke up Pereira’s no-hit bid in the ninth, singling up the middle.

Three Bulldogs were named to the all-tournament team – shortstop Christian Vitters, centerfielder Nick Moresi and pitcher Eddie Romero, who didn’t allow a hit in 5.1 innings in Friday’s win.

The Bulldogs (11-14) continue their 27-game homestand with a four-game series against Iona beginning on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.

Fresno State opens Western Athletic Conference play the following weekend with a three-game home series against Hawaii.
