The No. 18 Bulldogs (5-2) defeated Iowa State (2-9) 7-0 on the opening
day of the Bulldog Classic.
And with Jamie Southern in the circle, the reigning USA Today and Louisville
Slugger/NFCA national Division I player of the week, it wasn’t hard
for the Bulldogs to pick up a victory.
In seven innings of work, Southern had seven strikeouts and allowed two
hits while throwing 61 of her 90 pitches for strikes.
Also, Southern’s career strikeout total now stands at 1,086, only
14 short of the 1,100 plateau. If that plateau is reached, Southern will
become the 20th NCAA Division I player to hit that mark.
Fresno State catcher Nichole Willis finished her night 2 for 3 with her
third home run of the season, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Three home runs by Willis this season matches her 2004 season total of
three.
Junior shortstop Christina Clark was 3 for 3, hitting a double, single,
and triple consecutively in her three plate appearances.
The Bulldogs continue tournament play on Friday with a doubleheader against
St. John’s (5 p.m.) and Kent State (7 p.m.).
