San Ramon demolition to start today
By REUBEN CONTRERAS
Demolition of the San Ramon 2 building is scheduled to begin today.
The San Ramon 2 and 3 buildings were constructed in 1969 and in 1988 the
San Ramon 6 building was built to help temporarily with the shortage of
classrooms and office space. But now, after nearly 36 years, additional
classrooms and office space have been built in the new Science II building,
making San Ramon useless.

Director of facilities planning Gary Wilson said the construction projects
do create inconveniences. In the case of the San Ramon buildings, classes
moved before the start of the project, creating no or little inconvenience.
The San Ramon complex is also showing signs of old age. In the San Ramon
6 building, ceiling tiles have water stains. Some classrooms have walls
with holes, exposed cable wiring from the ceiling to televisions sets
push ceiling tiles out of place. In one room, a cable and phone outlet
is hanging out of place and carpet is worn out.
“It’s depressing. All of the buildings look the same,”
said Sean Mulhir, a mass communication and journalism. “Each room
has only one little window. It’s sad. The rooms are identical.”
At the beginning of February, construction workers began preparations
to remove the San Ramon buildings. San Ramon building 2, north of McLane
Hall, and building 3 northwest of the Satellite Student Union will be
removed March 7. San Ramon 6, west of San Ramon 3, is scheduled for razing
in May.
Fences have been installed around the two buildings to be demolished in
March.
Wilson said the fences are necessary so that crews can do the work that
includes removing hazardous materials before the structures are razed.
At the San Ramon 2 building site, warning signs are posted on the building,
warning of asbestos.
The San Ramon 6 building will remain open until April. By that time, the
remodeling of the Psychology/Human Services building should be complete.
Completion of that project will help move classes from San Ramon 6.
No announcement of what, if anything, will be built on the locations of
the San Ramon buildings.
