The Fresno State men’s basketball team went down against the Boise State Broncos on Saturday at the Save Mart Center with a final score of 69-53, extending the Bulldogs’ losing streak to four games right before the Mountain West Tournament.
The ‘Dogs have now lost six out of their last seven games, with a big week of basketball ahead that includes the Mountain West Tournament.
The Bulldogs shot 22-for-54 (40.7%) from the field.
DeShawn Gory recorded a double-double on the night, leading the ‘Dogs with 20 points and 11 boards. This is now his third game in a row with over 20 points despite losing those three games.
After the game, Head Coach Vance Walberg said that despite the lack of recent wins, the effort from his players remains the same.
“There’s disappointment,” Walberg said. “We want to win every game possible. But I know they’re trying. They’re competing.”
Walberg credited his team’s defensive effort early in the game, noting it was what helped the ‘Dogs stay in the game. However, he emphasized that the defensive efforts must be matched on both sides of the court.
“Our defense gave us a chance,” Walberg said. “But you can’t give up 17 offensive rebounds to anybody and expect to win.”
Injuries have continued to thin the Bulldogs’ roster; meanwhile, the status of starting guard Zaon Collins remains uncertain. Walberg is hopeful he will be back at the Mountain West Tournament next week.
The Bulldogs will play their final home regular-season game on March 3 against the San Jose State Spartans, where they will be honoring senior players Cameron Faas and Jake Heidbreder.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. for senior night.
