The Fresno State men’s basketball team defeated the San Jose State Spartans 70-55 on Jan. 6 to earn their first Mountain West Conference win this season. It snaps a six-game losing skid.
It is the first time the Bulldogs have won a road conference game since Feb. 10, 2024. It is also Head Coach Vance Walberg’s first conference win on the road.
From the opening tip, the Bulldogs were in control. A 6-for-6 start from the field fueled the ‘Dogs for the entire game.
Despite a quiet night from guard Jake Heidbreder, forward DeShawn Gory led the offensive effort with 16 points and 13 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Guard Zaon Collins added 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Forward Cameron Faas tied his season-high in points with 11 behind a perfect shooting performance in the first half.
Heidbreder finished the game with six points on 2-for-11 (18.2%).
The Bulldogs finished with 41 points in the paint and outrebounded the Spartans 39-21.
While the ‘Dogs did lead for the vast majority of the game, the Spartans did push in the second half with a 12-0 run to cut a 21-point Bulldog lead to just nine.
With their first road conference win, the ‘Dogs also surpassed their win total from last season.
The ‘Dogs will be back in action on Jan. 10 against the San Diego State Aztecs at Viejas Arena. They will return to the Save Mart Center on Jan. 13 to host the Colorado State Rams.
