Fresno State guard Ava Marr was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week on Dec. 15. This is the third time she has been honored by the Mountain West Conference this season. Marr ties former Bulldog guard Taija Sta. (Santa) Maria for the most Freshman of the Week honors in a season.
The nod comes after a 20-point performance against the Chicago State Cougars on Dec. 13. Marr shot 7-for-15 from the floor, including 6-for-12 from 3-point range.
Marr’s other two Freshman of the Week nods came on Nov. 10 and Dec. 1.
It took Sta. Maria until Feb. 12, 2024, to secure her third Freshman of the Week honor — three months into the season.
In two games this week against the Saint Mary’s Gaels and Cougars, Marr averaged 15 points and two steals while shooting 8-for-20 (40%) from beyond the arc. The standout freshman has seen an uptick in her minutes since the Bulldogs lost their second-leading scorer, Ashlyn Rean, to a lower-body injury.
After the Bulldogs’ victory over the Cougars on Saturday, Marr said that she’s getting comfortable with the style of play from Head Coach Ryan McCarthy.
On the season as a whole, Marr is averaging 6.7 points per game on 36.8% shooting from the field.
Marr and the Bulldogs are back in the Save Mart Center as they open up Mountain West Conference play against the San Diego State Aztecs on Dec. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
