Demonstrators gathered at River Park on Blackstone and Nees avenues to protest against President Donald Trump and his administration’s actions against Venezuelan boats in the Atlantic.
Despite the cold weather, protesters lined Nees Avenue with signs against the attacks.
“I think, like the people of Fresno, no matter what temperature it is, if it’s 50 or 110 degrees out, they’re always willing to show out, regardless of the weather,” said Jonathan Gardea, media liaison for the Central Valley Party for Socialism and Liberation.
The Trump administration carried out the first attack on Venezuelan boats on Sept. 2, citing that there were “terrorists transporting narcotics to the United States,” according to the New York Times.
Since then, the U.S. has carried out at least 22 attacks, killing 87 people, including one day when the U.S. struck three boats in one day, killing 22 people.
Among the protesters were demonstrators advocating for the end of the war in Gaza between Israel and Palestine.
One of the protesters, Anne Merrill, while holding a “Gaza is a genocide” sign, said that despite the harsh weather conditions, the motivation for being out in less-than-ideal conditions is knowing that the people in Gaza face much worse.
“It’s super cold, it’s wet [in Gaza],” Merrill said. “They’re starving, they’re being shot and killed and murdered even in a ceasefire.”
Other protesters, alongside Merrill, held signs of peace symbols for Palestine and Ukraine and signs showing support for immigrants.
As more and more attention was drawn to their corner by honking cars, more and more people joined in with signs of their own.
“It makes me feel really good,” Gardea said. “It’s very heartwarming to know that, like I said, no matter the weather, the people of Fresno — they’re always willing to come out and voice their support.”
