Students and residents gathered Friday morning at Campus Pointe to welcome the official grand opening of Street Corner Urban Market, a new store that aims to bring healthy, affordable choices to the Fresno State community.
The event featured food samples, vendor giveaways, free ICEEs and raffle giveaways from partners like Crunch Fitness. For most visitors, this was the first look inside the fully stocked market located beside Starbucks. It also sits near a new housing complex that is opening soon.
Franchise owners Parminder and Karnvir Kular said the day marked the final product after nearly a year of planning and listening to the campus community.
“As a Fresno State alumna, my husband and I are excited to cater to our students, our faculty, our local residents and the new hotel right behind us,” Parminder said. “We are blessed that we have this location and we hope to grow here with Fresno State.”
The store opened with a soft launch in July and spent the following months adjusting its inventory based on customer feedback. Parminder said the team wanted to “perfect” the space before Friday’s full opening.
“What we do is provide a lot of healthy snack options,” Parminder said. “We have a hot kitchen. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also provide alcohol, beer and wine. Our main focus is to make sure we provide healthy snack options. We have a lot of organic products you see in bigger chain stores such as Sprouts, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.”
Some Fresno State students said they already rely on the store for their needs. Humberto Ramirez visits several times a week.
“I just get an energy drink before I go to the gym, so it’s convenient,” Ramirez said. “There’s a large variety of snacks and drinks but also things you can use for everyday life, like laundry detergent and paper. It is there when you need it.”
Vikram Dhillon, CEO of Street Corner Urban Market, said the Fresno store reflects the company’s goal of creating markets that fit the communities around them.
Area developer and franchise owner of the company, Jasdeep Randhawa, echoed this idea. He said the location was intentional, and people have responded positively to the new addition.
Campus leaders like Fresno State Police Chief Anthony Martinez also welcomed the addition, saying the market fills an important need for students living and studying on campus.
“This was a great event for Fresno State and we wish the ownership much success,” Martinez said.
He added that campus police have already started coordinating with the store to ensure the safety of customers.
Friday’s celebration marks the beginning of full hours, with the store open until 10 p.m. and serving fresh made meals from breakfast through dinner. It opens at 8 a.m. on the weekends and 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.
“It has been a blessing to work with our family,” Parminder said. “We like to work hard and we like to give back.”
