Saturday, Sept. 6, was the first College GameDay episode without Lee Corso in 38 years.
He joined back in 1987 to be the comedic relief. His signature catchphrase was “Not so fast, my friend,” while waving his Dixon Ticonderoga No.2 pencil in Kirk Herbstreit’s or the guest’s face when he disagreed with their pick.
He had funny moments using this catchphrase, but a big reason that Corso will be remembered is when he introduced using a mascot head to make his picks. He brought this to the show in 1996, and his first pick was the Ohio State Buckeyes. This moment is what caused College GameDay to gain more viewers.
The headgear picks were liked by all the College GameDay fans, so when Corso and the crew got what college teams they were going to pick as winners he would see what headgear he could get. His top three schools were Ohio State with 46 times, the Alabama Crimson Tide 38 times and the Oregon Ducks 21 times.
On Nov. 1, 2014, Corso put on the Texas Christian University Super Frog and this was his 250th headgear pick. He made his 400th pick on Sept. 16, 2023, where he donned the University of Colorado’s Chip the Buffalo headgear.
Over his whole career, he made a total of 430 headgear picks and had a 286-144 record. He did have one season in 1999 where every headgear pick he guessed was right over the 11-week season.
Corso started a tradition that will always be remembered. Even on his last show of College GameDay, he went out with a bang. He guessed every game right. Two of those teams he guessed right were his alma mater, Florida State; and, of course, he chose the Buckeyes as his final headgear pick to end his career how he started it.
