Described by The Chicago Tribune as an “an eloquent tapestry of love, intellect, and rebellion,” Fresno State Theatre’s production of “The Sins of Sor Juana” will debut tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the John Wright Theatre.
The performances run on May 3 and May 6-10 at 7:30 p.m., then on May 4 at 2:30 p.m. The tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for military, staff, faculty and alumni and $10 for students.
“The Sins of Sor Juana” is directed by Gina Sandí-Díaz and is set in the 16th century, telling the story of the intellectual protagonist, Juana, and the jealous Viceroy. Juana has an influence over the Viceroy’s wife, Vicerine, who arranges a beneficial marriage for Juana to ensure she’ll always have a place in the Viceroy’s court.
The Viceroy, believing that Juana’s engagement will negatively impact his own marriage, arranges for a man to come seduce Juana.
Aside from the love complications, Juana has an important decision to make: should she sacrifice her intellect and poetry for the sake of normalcy?
“The Sins Sor Juana” is inspired by the life and accomplishments of Juana Inés de la Cruz, who is renowned for writing what is believed to be the first feminist manifesto, her advocacy for women’s rights and owning the largest library of the New World.
Sandí Diaz describes Juana as “one of Mexico’s national icons” in the press release. The play showcases historical significance while implementing a layer of dramatic romance.
Doors open to the theater 30 minutes before the show, and attendees must get there on time to be admitted. Parking is free for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows. Children under 5 years old will not be admitted.
After the May 4 show, the Departments of English and Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures will present a free show, “Poesía/Poetry.”
