The Fresno State softball team was scheduled to play a doubleheader at Santa Clara on Tuesday afternoon, but rather than playing two games, the Bulldogs (4-2) and Broncos decided to play for quality not quantity.
Fresno State’s Robin Mackin pitched 12-innings and won an extended pitcher’s duel 3-2.
With the score tied at one, the Bulldogs’ Jenna Cervantez gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with a swing of the bat. Cervantez’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning scored Mackin who was on second base.
Santa Clara answered the Bulldogs in the bottom of the 10th inning but Fresno State freshman Brooke Phipps’ capitalized on a Santa Clara throwing error in the top of the 12th inning to score the winning run.
Fresno State improved to 4-2 with the victory and will return home this Friday to host a three-game series against No. 21 Louisville.
The extra-inning affair in the first game caused the second game to be canceled due to darkness.
