Former Fresno State basketball star Melvin Ely has found a new home in the NBA with the Charlotte Bobcats, shipping him to the San Antonio Spurs.

The deal has Ely joining the perennial playoff contending San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Eric Williams and a second-round pick in 2009.

Ely, the Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer with 1,951 career points, is in his fifth season in the NBA. The 6-foot 10-inch forward/center has appeared in 24 games for the Bobcats this season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per game played.

Originally the 12th overall selection in the 2002 NBA draft, the 28-year old Ely began his career with the Los Angeles Clippers before eventually being moved to Charlotte.

In late December, Ely asked the Bobcats for a trade to another team in hopes of seeing more playing time.
