“Bush Wars” cartoon disrespectful

I occasionally pick up a copy of The Collegian while waiting for my last class of the day. I usually find articles that I agree with as well as articles that I disagree with.

What has made my experience with The Collegian enjoyable is that even the opinions that I disagree with have some substance to them. That is, there is some point to be heard and appreciated and moreover, they typically show respect for all people.

This is not the case with the “Bush Wars” cartoon strip. The May 1 issue of The Collegian featured the usual filth—an offensive, ignorant, and unfunny cartoon of President Bush in a Darth Vader costume, pushing a light saber through a Jedi knight.

Besides displaying a complete lack of respect for authority and serious deficiency in creative genius, this cartoon strip had absolutely no point.

I am ashamed to see something so childish in my university newspaper and hope The Collegian will not repeat the mistake of publishing “Bush Wars.”

Unite to support immigrant rights

In reading the Friday [April 26] edition of The Collegian, my department was mistakenly named the “Department of Chicano and Latino Studies.”
The department’s proper name is the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies.
I was also misquoted by reporter Rebecca Martin when she states that my “personal opinion on the events is different from the California Faculty Association.”

As CFA President at the time of the interview, I fully support the CFA resolution that was be published in the May 1 edition of The Collegian.

If you read the resolution, you will see that there is wide latitude to engage in those actions that members and supporters of immigrant rights “deem appropriate.” We are all in favor of a vigorous democratic debate on the issue of immigration.

We hope that faculty, staff, and students can all unite in support of immigrant workers and their rights so that we can have a flourishing democracy in this country.

The growth of a democratic spirit can be found in the very slogan of the immigrant rights movement: “Today We March. Tomorrow We Vote.”

United we win!

— Dr. Carlos Perez
Department Chair, Chicano and Latin American Studies
