The University Student Union will celebrate Cinco de Mayo today.

“We are celebrating Cinco de Mayo out on the USU balcony with Mexican dishes donated by Los Amigos and entertainment by Mariachi San Cruise and Gruto Solkoriz,” USU program adviser Josh Edrington said. “We are pleased to be spreading awareness of the Mexican culture to the other students.”

“USU and Los Amigos will be providing all the food,” Edrington, said. “USU paid for half of the service and the food, and Los Amigos donated the other half.”

Angelina Carrasco, USU Celebrations and Festivals Coordinator, said. “Between USU and Los Amigos, we are serving over $800 worth of Mexican dishes.” Los Amigos will be serving rice, beans, enchiladas and other Mexican dishes on the balcony, starting around 12 p.m. until they finish serving.

The Mariachi San Cruise will be performing at two different times, 12-12:30 p.m. and 12:45-1 p.m. Then the Fresno City College’s Gruto Solkoriz Dancers will be performing during the break at 12:30-12:45 p.m. on the South Patio.

“Most people think we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, because of Mexico’s Independence Day,” Carrasco said.

“But we are celebrating this day, because Mexico won the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.”

“This celebration is not just for the Mexican people, it is for everyone to enjoy and to get others informed of the Mexican culture, by sharing in the festivities,” Edrington, said.
