Fresno State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams achieved different results this weekend at the WAC championships in Boise, Idaho.

The Fresno State women’s tennis team won its third set of the deciding match to take its fifth consecutive WAC title.

Senior Lucia Sainz won the crucial match to give the Bulldogs the win.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the match, winning three doubles matches early on, but the Broncos were able to tie by winning three singles matches.

Sainz won the third set of her match, giving Fresno State the narrow win to capture the league title.

“I’m so proud of these ladies,” head coach Simon Thibodeau said. “They fought hard all the way to the end. It was a very tough environment to play in and Boise State’s crowd was really loud. But we stuck together and showed why we’re the champions.”

Thibodeau was named Coach of the Year, while freshman Melanie Gloria was named both Player and Freshman of the Year.

Gloria, Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter each earned first-team All-WAC honors in singles and doubles.
Meanwhile, the Fresno State men’s tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Boise State during the Western Athletic Conference title match Sunday afternoon in Idaho.

The match was decided in the No. 2 singles match when senior Sergiu Moduc fell to Boise State’s Thhomas Schoeck.

Moduc won the first set of the match and Schoeck won the second. The pair fought to a third tiebreaker set before Schoeck won 7-4.

The loss drops the Bulldogs’ season record to 15-7.

“I’m so proud of our guys, they competed very well throughout this entire tournament,” head coach Jay Udwadia said in a press release about the match. “They fought their little hearts out today and we put ourselves in a great situation to win. We just came up a little bit short.”

Junior Jakub Cech was named WAC Player of the Year and was named to the first team All-WAC in singles for the second straight year while Moduc and senior Sam Gibbs were named first-team All-WAC in doubles.
