Our Opinion

Vote Juan Pablo Moncayo for president

THIS YEAR’S AS presidential election has brought three good candidates to the public sphere.

Each of the three men running for the office has been impressive in both their grasp of the issues facing Fresno State students and their ability to reach out and run positive campaigns.

Yet the candidate who has been most impressive during the course of the campaign, and in his AS experience, is Juan Pablo Moncayo.

During The Collegian’s televised debate between the three candidates, Moncayo’s answers and platform were the most relevant to the needs of students.

When asked what the biggest problem facing Fresno State students is, Moncayo answered that while tradition and student involvement in AS are important to the campus, money matters and university funding from the state are the most important considerations for students today.

Moncayo is correct in this statement and his pledge to lobby at the state government level for funding should be welcome to the Fresno State student body.

Moncayo also pledged to work on textbook costs, parking problems on campus and the creation of new study space to replace the areas being lost with the pending closure of the Madden Library.

In addition to these pledges, Moncayo’s platform states that he will work to create an honors program in each of the university’s colleges for upperclassmen who show exceptional promise in their lower-division work.

The creation of such programs would go far to increase not only the university’s reputation but also serve to keep Fresno State’s most intelligent and promising students working on material of their own choosing and at their own level.

This program would also make Fresno State an academic leader in the CSU system.

In addition to these ideas, Moncayo would bring extraordinary experience to the office of President.

As the only current AS executive in the race, he has had a first-hand opportunity to observe how executive offices function.

As a result, Moncayo has called for the creation of a Presidential Cabinet that would assist him in the duties of the office and make him more responsive to student needs.

While all three of the AS presidential candidates would do well in the office and represent Fresno State’s student body with honor, Moncayo has the most realistic plans for the future of the university and has shown that he has the dedication to serve with distinction.

As a result, The Collegian is proud to endorse Juan Pablo Moncayo for AS president.
