Debate over amphitheater’s future necessary

Principal Jones said UHS was “conceived by the university” and “the College of Arts and Humanities started” UHS and “finally decided on using the old amphitheater.”

Why have students never been asked if they want UHS on their campus? Why have they never been asked if they are willing to give up their amphitheater for UHS? When Jones brings up “university” and “College of Arts and Humanities” he unfortunately fails to mention that he is talking about a very limited number of people that made decisions for the entirety of the student body – without any kind of real consultation. Maybe students have never been asked because their answers might have been unwelcome.

It was Associated Students that took it upon themselves to start a discussion, a discussion that for the very first time involves everyone: students of the University and UHS as well as their respective administrations.

Finally, true efforts are being made to initiate a process that will hopefully culminate into the full integration of UHS as a viable part of Fresno State. It will be a rocky road but I am sure that everyone concerned is truly seeking a compromise and the best solution for Fresno State.

The amphitheater clearly is not the best option for a new UHS campus. It is one of the last remaining pieces of campus land that can be used for new construction. It is at the heart of campus. Fresno State students truly cherish their amphitheater.
