This Tuesday one of the most
prolific writers of our time will appear at the Satellite Student Union
as part of the University Lecture Series.
Joyce Carol Oates, author of dozens of critically acclaimed and award-winning
books, will visit Fresno State to discuss her recent works and talk about
writing. Oates will also take part in a question and answer session in
the Alice Peters Auditorium at 2:30 p.m. that day.
One of the most well respected authors of our time, Oates has a 25-year
writing career that includes more than 70 books of fiction, short story
collections, drama and more. She is one of the most well known authors
to come to campus.
Oates’ list of accomplishments includes the PEN/Malamud Award for
Excellence in Short Fiction, the National Book of the Year in 1970 for
the book “Them,” national best sellers “We Were the
Mulvaneys” and “Blonde,” and her book “Black Water,”
which earned her a Pulitzer Prize nomination, according to Oates’
official Web site.
Readers have critically acclaimed her most recent work, “The Falls.”
Set in Niagara Falls, the book weaves a story of the seductive and devastatingly
powerful, almost mystical, forces of the falls.
The main character Ariah and her new husband, Gilbert, go to Niagara Falls
for their honeymoon. The morning after they are married, Gilbert walks
to the falls and throws himself over the edge. This all happens in the
first 12 pages.
Oates’ will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite
Student Union. Tickets for the event are $2 for students, $5 for faculty/staff
and $10 general. Advanced tickets are available at the USU information
desk.
