Women's golf takes fourth at WAC championship

Women's golf takes fourth at WAC championship

Staff Report / The Collegian

In only its first year of existence, the Fresno State women’s golf team is continuing to take the competition by surprise.

The Bulldogs shot 300 on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference women’s golf championship at the par-72 Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho to take fourth place.

Fresno State shot a three-day 920, 56 over par and 31 strokes behind first-place Tulsa, which won its seventh straight WAC championship.

Bulldogs Freshman Laura Luethke was named WAC freshman of the year and was placed on the all-WAC first team, and Bulldogs coach Angie Cates was named WAC coach of the year. Tulsa senior Lee-Anne Pace (75-74-68-217), who shot a tournament-best 4-under 68 on Wednesday to win the championship, was selected as WAC player of the year.

San Jose State’s Jenelle Gomez (73-71-75-219), an all-WAC second team selection, took second in the tournament, and Tulsa’s Michaela Cavener (71-74-75-220), also a second team selection, finished in third place.

Luethke (74-74-74-222) finished in fourth at the tournament after shooting three straight 74s to finish at 6-over 222. Meggie Fagundes (78-78-73-229) shot a 1-over 73 on Wednesday, tied for the second-best round of the day, to climb from 16th after Tuesday’s round and finish in a four-way tie for 10th in the tournament.

Other Bulldogs in the tournament included Yumi Chang (80-76-76-232), who shot 16-over for the tournament to tie for 17th; Adrianna Chico (84-76-77-237), who tied for 24th; and Tiffany Veerkamp (84-83-85-252), who finished in 38th.

Joining Luethke and Pace on the all-WAC first team were sophomores Dale Gammie, of Hawaii, and SMU’s Jennifer Ackerson and Laura Cross.
