Women's golf takes fourth at WAC championship

In only its first year of existence, the Fresno State women’s golf
team is continuing to take the competition by surprise.
The Bulldogs shot 300 on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference
women’s golf championship at the par-72 Falcon Crest Golf Club in
Kuna, Idaho to take fourth place.
Fresno State shot a three-day 920, 56 over par and 31 strokes behind first-place
Tulsa, which won its seventh straight WAC championship.
Bulldogs Freshman Laura Luethke was named WAC freshman of the year and
was placed on the all-WAC first team, and Bulldogs coach Angie Cates was
named WAC coach of the year. Tulsa senior Lee-Anne Pace (75-74-68-217),
who shot a tournament-best 4-under 68 on Wednesday to win the championship,
was selected as WAC player of the year.
San Jose State’s Jenelle Gomez (73-71-75-219), an all-WAC second
team selection, took second in the tournament, and Tulsa’s Michaela
Cavener (71-74-75-220), also a second team selection, finished in third
place.
Luethke (74-74-74-222) finished in fourth at the tournament after shooting
three straight 74s to finish at 6-over 222. Meggie Fagundes (78-78-73-229)
shot a 1-over 73 on Wednesday, tied for the second-best round of the day,
to climb from 16th after Tuesday’s round and finish in a four-way
tie for 10th in the tournament.
Other Bulldogs in the tournament included Yumi Chang (80-76-76-232), who
shot 16-over for the tournament to tie for 17th; Adrianna Chico (84-76-77-237),
who tied for 24th; and Tiffany Veerkamp (84-83-85-252), who finished in
38th.
Joining Luethke and Pace on the all-WAC first team were sophomores Dale
Gammie, of Hawaii, and SMU’s Jennifer Ackerson and Laura Cross.
