Pitcher Doug Fister worked the full nine innings for his second-straight complete-game victory in Fresno State’s 2-1 win over 13th ranked Rice on Sunday at Beiden Field.

That was one clutch performance, with freshman third baseman Beau Mills delivering the other.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth inning, Mills singled to left field with two runners on to score Christian Vitters from second and give Fresno State the victory.

Fister allowed six hits and struck out six.

Rice’s only run came in the fifth inning, when the Owls took a 1-0 lead. After hitting a single to lead off the inning, Rice’s Danny Lehmann advanced to third on a single by Adam Hale. That brought up Brian Friday, who grounded into a double play, allowing Lehmann to score.

The Bulldogs tied the score in the sixth on a Nick Moresi single that knocked in DeAndre Miller. Miller singled to reach base before advancing to second on a passed ball and moving to third on a wild pitch.

Fresno State lost the first two games of the series 8-2 and 8-0, respectively.

Sunday’s win improved Fresno State to 18-17 overall and 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. Rice fell to 22-10, 4-5.

The Bulldogs next head to San Jose State for a weekend series after concluding a 27-game homestand.

SOFTBALL

Shauna Johnson hit an RBI single in the fourth inning on Sunday to help Fresno State to a 1-0 victory over Hawaii and close out a three-game sweep.

Pitcher Jamie Southern got the win, allowing six hits and striking out seven in the complete game.

Southern improved to 13-2 on the season with her eighth shutout of the year.

Fresno State beat Hawaii 3-1 in Game 1 on Saturday, before winning 5-3 in extra innings in the second game of the day.

The No. 21 Bulldogs improved to 24-8 overall and 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
