Softball struggles at plate vs. UCLA

Fresno State was tacking on the wins in the Bulldog Classic over the
weekend. That is, until Sunday’s championship matchup with UCLA.
The host No. 18 Bulldogs (9-3) had won five straight games to open the
classic before losing 7-0 and going hitless against No. 4 UCLA (16-5)
in front of an announced 2,825 fans at Bulldog Diamond.

game on Sunday. Photo by Joseph Hollak |
Bruins freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden struck out 16 Bulldogs in the
seven-inning effort.
Fresno State pitcher Jamie Southern gave up 11 hits and seven runs (two
earned) in seven innings. The Bulldogs had two errors in the game, compared
to one by UCLA.
Fresno State’s biggest bats were kept quiet by Selden.
The loss dropped Southern’s record to 5-2 on the season, but she
did reach a milestone during the game. Her six strikeouts give her 1,103
in her career. Only 21 pitchers in NCAA Division I history have reached
the 1,100 plateau.
The two teams were stuck in a scoreless tie until the top of the fifth
inning, when UCLA’s Caitlin Benyi hit a two-run home run.
Sophomore Rachael Donaldson represented the Bulldogs on the all-tournament
team.
