Fox's beat-the-clock crisis show pushes stereotypes

'Debbie Does Dallas' auditions today

By LILIAN GARICA

No, it’s not what you think.

The Experimental Theatre Company is holding auditions for “Debbie Does Dallas.” Auditions will be held in Lab School 101 today and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. Fresno State students, as well as community members, are encouraged to audition. The cast will consist of five female roles and three male roles.

Senior theatre arts major Alex Lawrence will direct the musical. This will be his first time directing a large musical. Erin Soto will handle the choreography.

“I am looking for someone fun, someone willing to do anything,” Lawrence said.

“Debbie Does Dallas” is a musical that makes fun of the original 1978 adult movie. The production was first performed in 2001 during the New York International Fringe Festival, then as an off-Broadway production.

“We’re basically doing the off-Broadway production,” Lawrence says.

Although the musical’s title leaves little to the imagination, the play does actually have a storyline. It is about a young girl named Debbie Benton, an aspiring Texas Cowboys cheerleader. She is accepted as a Cowboys cheerleader, but her only obstacle now is money. Debbie’s friends are willing to do anything to get Debbie to Texas. Anything.

This coming-of-age musical wil debut April 22 and run through April 24.
