Bill aims to lower textbook costs 30 percent

Fate of AB 2477 rests on appropriations committee decision May 5

Under the leadership of State Assemblywoman Carol Liu, members of the Committee on Higher Education committed to lowering textbook costs in California March 31. Through passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 2477, which encourages the ‘unbundling’ of instruction materials to give students options of buying only the materials needed, the committee proposes to cut overall textbook costs for college students by 30 to 40 percent.More>>

 

Peace Corps volunteer options to be discussed

For graduates who aren’t sure about what to do with their future, spending the next two years as a volunteer in the Peace Corps might be an option. The Peace Corps is an agency of the federal government in which volunteers have served 138 countries since 1961. Peace Corps volunteers perform various duties from youth outreach and community development to information technology. Volunteers work and live in the communities, learning local languages and cultures.More>>

 

Dorm security continues to be upgraded, director says

Johnson says propped doors could lead to necessity of dorm entry logs

Strategic planning has slowly upgraded security in the dorms over the past few years and will continue, Director of Housing Karen Johnson said Tuesday. Safety is stressed to students who live on campus in order to avoid incidents where their safety may be at stake. “ Anytime something is published, there is going to be heightened awareness,” Johnson said, referring to the rape charges made by a student in Baker Hall earlier this month. The Collegian wins awards

The Collegian has won seven awards in Division B of the 2003-2004 California College Media Competition. Division B student papers publish fewer than four times per week. The Collegian tied for the second highest number of awards with the The Graphic from Pepperdine University, a weekly paper. The State Hornet, Sacramento State University’s weekly paper, won eight awards.More>>
