The Collegian wins awards

The Collegian has won seven awards in Division B of the 2003-2004 California College Media Competition. Division B student papers publish fewer than four times per week.

The Collegian tied for the second highest number of awards with the The Graphic from Pepperdine University, a weekly paper. The State Hornet, Sacramento State University’s weekly paper, won eight awards.

The Collegian’s awards included:

• Second place in the ‘Best Features Photograph’ category for Ryan Smith’s “Knowledge of Self”

• Second place in the ‘Best Sports Photograph’ category for Jill Richards’ “Dog eat Dog”

• Third place in the ‘Best Sports Photograph’ category for Cary Edmondson’s “Soccer”

• An honorable mention in the ‘Best Sports Photograph’ category for Jeff Criesi’s “Bulldogs are hurting after big loss”

• Second place in the ‘Best Headline’ category for Jeff Criesi’s “The Sweaty Smell of Success”

• Third place in the ‘Best Headline’ category for Eddie Hughes’ “Voluntary Manslaughter”

• Second place in the ‘Best Opinion Section’ category

Newspaper entries were judged by the Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee. About 20 four-year schools and 20 two-year schools from all over the state participated.
