Internship fair will include 30 employers

If students are looking for a productive summer, they don’t have to search any farther than their college campus.

The annual Internship and Summer Job Fair takes place Feb.11 at the Satellite Student Union from 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. About 30 employers from local and national companies and summer camps will be in attendance to talk about summer and paid internships.

“Even though it is foggy and cold now, summer is right around the corner,” said coordinator Aleta Wolfe. “It might seem early, but employers are looking to fill positions by April, to accommodate time schedules.”
The Internship and Summer Job Fair, which has been around for more than 20 years, attracts about 650 students annually. According to Wolfe, last year an estimated 422 students were employed from 38 organizations.

“ Employers value our students, that’s why they come back every year,” said Wolfe, who is also a career service counselor.

Businesses such as CSU Summer Arts, Pepsi Bottling Group, Walgreen Co., Mount Hermon Camp and Gottschalk’s will each have booths and representatives at the fair.

“ We are looking for students who are flexible to work in a high energy environment and fast and long hours,” said Wendy Costa, community relations specialist for CSU Summer Arts.

Cheryl Cardel, a corporate recruiter for Gottschalks, is looking for students who have a serious interest in retail sales. Cardel says there are several positions in merchandising and buying, in-store operations, advertising and financing.

Those involved in the job fair say students should attend the event with resumes in hand, and introduce themselves to the employers.

“ We think it’s important for students to be involved with internships, because it provides them with on-the-job experience, not just with us, but other companies in their field of interest,” Cardel said.
