Fresno State’s University Theatre will bring “Twelfth Night” to the stage May 1-9, presenting one of William Shakespeare’s most popular comedies.
Directed by Michelle Bellaver, the production follows Viola, who is shipwrecked and separated from her twin brother before disguising herself as a man to work for Duke Orsino. Things get complicated as Viola falls for Orsino, who loves Countess Olivia, who then falls for Viola in disguise.
At the center of the show is Olivia, played by Beyonce Rodriguez-Fabela, a senior theatre arts acting major. She said the production blends humor with emotional moments that feel relatable.
“This show has pretty much everything,”Rodriguez-Fabela said. “There is so much love and loss and so many funny moments that will make audiences laugh and relate to these characters.”
That mix of humor and emotion continues throughout the show, touching on identity, love and deception through quick scenes and mix-ups.
Performances will take place at the John Wright Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on May 1-2 and 5-9, with a 2 p.m. matinee on May 3. Parking is free for Friday through Sunday shows, while weekday parking permits can be purchased online.
Tickets are available online, with discounted options for students. For more information, students can visit the University Theatre Instagram.
