Students at the Fresno State Horticulture Nursery have spent the past four months growing thousands of plants, all of which will be available to the public at this weekend’s Spring Plant Sale.
The sale will take place on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Gibson Farm Market. The event will feature more than 200 varieties and roughly 6,000 individual plants, including vegetables, herbs, citrus trees, flowers, ornamental plants and succulents. All plants are student-grown and maintained. Options are available for both experienced gardeners and those just getting started.
“There is an abundance of plants, and they are ready to be planted into your garden,” said Patty Terry, store manager at Gibson Farm Market.
She said the sale also highlights the importance of plant science and agriculture in the Central Valley, while giving students hands-on experience in a field that directly impacts their community.
“It’s all student-produced and student-grown,” said Ernesto Duran, horticulture unit manager. “They basically work on this production for about four months. It’s a lot of rigorous watering, fertilizing and pest control. It’s basically a 24/7 operation all seven days, taking care of plants.”
Duran said students are responsible for every stage of the growing process, from early planting to daily maintenance leading up to the sale.
“All the funds that are generated go back to the unit for future operations,” Duran said. “Our main focus is being able to connect the community to the university and showcase what students produce.”
The event has become highly anticipated within the community. Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early, as popular plants tend to sell quickly.
