Mountain West Conference play starts this Friday for the Diamond ‘Dogs after a rocky non-conference schedule.
The Bulldogs wrapped up non-conference play with a 7-8 record, dropping their last four games to the University of Arizona and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
In their last two contests, the Bulldogs have lost both by 10 runs.
However, the Bulldogs accomplished great feats during the non-conference portion of their season. They took two of three from Stanford during their three-game series for the first time in 27 years. That same week, outfielder Sky Collins was named Mountain West Player of the Week.
Collins hit .467 with five RBIs to go along with three multi-hit games to earn the week two honors.
Left-handed freshman pitcher Parker Heintz was also named Mountain West Freshman of the Week. He made two appearances for the Bulldogs, not allowing a run and picking up a save against Stanford.
The Bulldogs, through the early part of the season, have been led by their freshman infield talent. The left-handed infielder Mikey Boyd has posted a batting average of .395 to go along with a 1.015 OPS, both of which lead the Bulldogs. Boyd’s freshman counterpart, infielder Brady Hewitt, is third on the team in batting average with a .333 mark and second on the team with a .962 OPS.
On the pitching side of things, Heintz and fellow left-hander BJ Rodriguez both are posting an ERA under one.
This season is the final one for the Bulldogs in the Mountain West as they head to the Pac-12 in July. They will open up their final conference play as members of the Mountain West against the University of Nevada, Reno, in a three-game series starting on March 13. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
