The Fresno State water polo team split its weekend tournament series at the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, going 2-2.
Senior attacker Hailey Andress became the program’s all-time leading scorer, breaking former Bulldog Brooke Ochoa’s record of 217 career goals. Ochoa’s record stood for just 322 days.
After the weekend, Andress’ total now sits at 225.
The Bulldogs started the weekend on Feb. 6 with a match against the No. 6-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. A scoreless second period thwarted any chance at a late comeback, but the ‘Dogs fought to the end.
Despite goalie Katelyn Mobley outdueling her counterpart, Sanne Keijzer, the Bulldogs’ inefficiency on power play opportunities came back to bite them.
Freshman attacker Charley Stephens led the offensive effort with four goals, and Andress potted one to inch her closer to the record.
On Feb. 7, the ‘Dogs were slated to play two games, and they came out firing, totaling 48 goals.
Game one saw them take on the University of California, Santa Barbara Gauchos. After hopping out to an early 4-0 lead, the ‘Dogs never looked back, defeating the Gauchos 26-9.
13 different Bulldogs found the back of the net, including Andress, center Georgia Daly, attacker Riaan Bryant, center Caitlyn Mossman and attacker Ashley Williams, who all scored multiple goals.
Andress potted the most, with six goals in the victory. It put her at career goal No. 216 heading into game two of the afternoon.
It took one period for Andress to set the record, scoring goal No. 218 with under a minute left in the first frame.
After extending their lead to 6-1 off of Andress’ record-setting goal, the ‘Dogs again pulled ahead, defeating the Cal Lutheran Regals 22-4.
On day two, the ‘Dogs outscored their opponents 48-13.
The highs of Saturday’s victories were short-lived, as on Feb. 8, the ‘Dogs would drop their final game of the ASU Invitational to the Marist University Red Foxes.
The ‘Dogs took an 8-7 lead after two periods, but a scoreless third period allowed the Red Foxes to take a 10-8 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Despite four goals from Andress, the ‘Dogs came up just short, losing 13-10 to end their time at the ASU Invitational.
The ‘Dogs will be back in the pool from Feb. 13-15 in Irvine, California, as they play in the Kalbus Invite.
