During finals week, the library carries a constant kind of exhaustion.
Not an everyday kind of tired, but the deep, dragging exhaustion of finals week. The kind that smells like burnt coffee and old paper, where eraser shavings scatter across long tables and pencils are worn down to dull, defeated points. Chairs scrape softly as students readjust for the hundredth time, trying to get comfortable in a place not meant for comfort.
“The atmosphere in the library does tend to be a lot more loud and tense at the moment due to everyone’s stress from finals,” said Leilah Hunt, a senior mechanical engineering student at Fresno State. “But I do think it’s a really enjoyable concept, and a good way to study alongside your friends as well.”
As the semester winds down, students slip into a familiar routine. Everyone looks focused, but no one looks relaxed. Screens glow harshly in dim lighting. Notes blur together. Brains feel fried, yet people keep going, convinced that one more hour might protect a grade hanging in the balance.
“I’m actually encouraged more to go to the library and get work for finals done when it’s open 24 hours,” said Analiese Figueroa, a senior architecture student at Fresno State. “It allows me to get out of the house and into a different environment where I can really focus.”
On Monday, as the clock strikes 9 p.m., stress shows up in nonverbal ways. Legs bounce under tables. Fingers tap against keyboards. Someone sighs loudly, then apologizes without looking up. A student rubs their temples like they’re trying to push information into their head. People are here physically, but mentally, most hover somewhere between exhaustion and panic.

“I actually took advantage of the library being open 24 hours, and the atmosphere was more quiet and calm than if I were to have gone during the normal hours,” said Gizzel Velasco, a senior at Fresno State. “It allowed me to sit down and get in the zone of studying and create a safe, cozy environment while I tried to cram all the information I needed to pass my finals.”
Finals week turns studying into a lifestyle. Dinner becomes whatever fits in a backpack. Sleep feels optional. Time loses meaning as days blur together and the library starts to feel like a second home.
Library staff members move quietly through the regular library hours, assisting when needed and observing the rhythm of finals week from behind the desk before hours begin. They help students locate open computers, troubleshoot printers that refuse to cooperate and point tired faces toward the right floor or study space. Mostly, they watch.
“The library gives students a comfortable place to focus,” said Jesse Xiong, a student assistant at the Fresno State Library. “You see both introverts and extroverts here, but the late hours really cater to introverts who need calm and structure.”
The pressure feels heavier because it matters. The grades matter. Futures hang in the balance. The work done here feels high-stakes, and every late night carries the weight of what comes next.
Still, there’s comfort in the shared chaos. Strangers trade chargers. Someone whispers a joke that earns a tired smile. For a moment, the anxiety softens.
The library never quite reaches its breaking point, but it stays close to it all week long. Students keep coming back, half-awake and fully stressed, riding out finals together night after night.

Really enjoyed this story. Your description of the vibe in the library is evocative and, yes, accurate! Fall finals season definitely hits different. Thanks for the story!
