Fresno State University Theatre will be presenting the musical “Godspell”. The musical was last performed on Broadway in 2012 and focuses on themes of love, compassion and community.
The ’70s musical was first performed at an off-Broadway venue and was inspired by the civil rights movement, the feminist movement and the sexual revolution.
“Our world is changing every single day as we face the unsettling reality about the injustice that prevails in our lives today,” said J. Daniel Herring, the director of “Godspell.” “In a time of confusion, conflict and unpredictability, ‘Godspell’s’ messages of hope and creating a better community for all have never been more important.”
“Godspell” will be performed at the John W. Wright Theatre on campus from Nov. 14-25. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 14-15 and Nov. 18-22. The performance will have a matinee at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16.
“Godspell” was originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, and the music will follow a soundtrack composed by Stephen Schwartz, the composer for “Wicked.” The musical is a retelling of the gospel, but with a modern twist, with the performers helping Jesus share his parables.
“I think that’s a cool concept,” said Lindsay Hernandez, a freshman psychology major. “Especially on a college campus, it can be hard to entertain a lot of the younger students and attract younger audiences.”
Ticket prices are $23 for general admission, $21 for Fresno State faculty, staff, alumni and military, and $5 for students. Children under five will not be permitted due to the mature nature of the play.
“These same topics are as relevant as they were during the 70’s,” Herring said. “I wanted to maintain the original conceptual ideas, but also transport the musical forward to our time using ideas, images, dance moves and props appropriate for 2025.”
