Hey Bulldogs! Hope your semester is off to a good start.
I already have a pretty hefty workload myself. Between juggling school, work and the many other aspects of my everyday life, I’ve had to kick it into high gear.
I’m beginning my senior year at Fresno State, and I’ve fallen victim to a semester slump or two in my time here. I know firsthand that college can get overwhelming fast—and as an out-of-state, commuter or first-time college student, it’s extra easy to feel isolated. That being said, here are my best tips and tricks for staying on top of the semester—with an emphasis on preserving your mental health through it all.
First—invest in a planner and actually use it. I used to be anti-planner, but after buying my undated daily planner, my entire perspective shifted.
It was hands down one of the best purchases I’ve ever made as someone who stays busy all year. Make it cute! Get a colorful and personalized one if that’ll motivate you to use it more, but really utilize it.
Next, get into a routine that works for you. Whether that’s as simple as deciding what day you’ll do your weekly pile of laundry, or designating study blocks as well as brain breaks throughout your day, routine will keep your mind, body and space organized.
However, it’s okay to stay flexible and adjust your routine accordingly. Don’t stress yourself out if you miss a workout or put off cleaning your room for a day—your routine should be a guideline, not a law.
Get your body moving in ways you can look forward to each week! Fresno has so many different fitness niches that you can join for free! Go to one of the many classes at the Student Rec Center—they host morning pilates, cycle, yoga and more. Join a run club—Valley Girls Run Club is my favorite one. Hit the new pickleball courts at East Rotary Park right by campus for open play or free beginner lessons. Your mind and body will thank you.
Make time for yourself and your loved ones. Have a self-care night or take an everything shower after a long day spent in school air. Get ready with your girlfriends to go out or grab some girl dinner. Take guilt-free power naps or rot in bed—it’s okay to give yourself a break. Lean on your people when the semester inevitably gets stressful, because that Canvas assignment can wait.
Most importantly, remember that you’re never alone. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to prioritize your mental health at the forefront of your education. Mental health resources are available to you that are included in your tuition at the Student Health and Counseling Center on campus. Use them!
If you aren’t taking care of yourself, you can’t expect to perform well academically. If you want that degree, you have to put yourself first above it all.
