At approximately 7 p.m., a Nissan Altima caught on fire on Chestnut Avenue and Bulldog Lane while two female Fresno State students were driving, police say.
A Fresno State police officer said the women were under the influence.
The individuals ran over a traffic sign, which ended up trapped underneath the vehicle. Police officers suspect that this is what caused the fire.
The vehicle suffered extensive damage, and there was fire extinguisher residue along the street, along with mud and skid marks.
A Collegian reporter asked to speak with one of the individuals, but she was unable to comment because of her inebriated state.
Fresno State police officers took the women to the police station at about 8 p.m., and tow truck drivers cleared the car from the scene.
The Collegian will update this story as more details become available.
