Former Bulldogs Mykell Robinson, Jalen Weaver and Steven Vasquez Jr. have been permanently banned from NCAA competition.
The ban follows a seven-month-long investigation that initially removed Weaver, Robinson and Zaon Collins from the Bulldogs in February. Collins was later allowed to rejoin the team.
Vasquez Jr. was removed from the San Jose State basketball team on Feb. 28 with no explanation.
The findings released by the NCAA Committee on Infractions found that Robinson placed several bets on Weaver during the 2024-25 season.
The NCAA’s ruling stated that these students bet on their own games and each other’s during the 2024-25 regular season. They also found evidence that Robinson intentionally underperformed to ensure that bets on his statistics would be won.
According to ABC30, Robinson and Vasquez communicated about having Robinson underperform during one game in the regular season in January.
This bet and Robinson’s underperformance rewarded Robinson, Vasquez and a third-party participant who had bet a combined total of $2,200 — leading to a total payout of $15,950, according to the NCAA.
The initial investigation, however, began with Weaver, after findings showed he had placed a daily fantasy wager on his point total for a Dec. 31, 2024, match versus the University of New Mexico. Weaver said he placed a $50 wager to score more than 11 points in the match. He finished with 13 in a 103-89 loss to the Lobos.
Weaver hit his over after nailing two free throws with 2:37 left in the second half. He was 3-for-13 from the field and 2-for-6 from three-point range in 31 minutes of playing time.
At the time of the investigation, Robinson had been away from the team since Jan. 11. The Bulldogs were traveling to Colorado to play the Air Force Falcons. Collins and Weaver were scratched from the lineup 30 minutes before tip-off.
Vasquez and Robinson were roommates during the 2023-24 basketball season. Vasquez transferred to San Jose State after the 2024 season. Robinson and Weaver were the only two returning players on the 2024-25 roster.
According to 247 Sports, Weaver entered the NCAA transfer portal on March 24, but was not signed by another school. Collins also entered the transfer portal on the same day, but re-enrolled at Fresno State on June 8.
Weaver, Robinson and Vasquez have been released from their programs and unenrolled from their respective schools.
