Recent assaults spark Violence Awareness Week activities

Saturday night, kinesiology major Carson Souza and classmate Zac Vanasen decided to walk home but had no idea they were about to become the latest statistic in off-campus violence. Souza said he and Vanasen were walking along Bulldog Lane toward Cedar Avenue when a white Chevy Malibu started to follow them.

The Big Fresno Fair takes safety precautions

Officials at the Big Fresno Fair say they have safety at the top of their priority list this year. The fair’s deputy manager Lauri King explained that everything at the Fresno fair is inspected multiple times by different agencies to ensure a safe experience.

Apartments, absence of fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers, fire alarms and all fire prevention devices are designed to prevent and minimize fires. Most residents, however, are unaware of them and often do not have them. About one out of every two homes are not required to have any fire safety inspections or fire extinguishers. The fire department has no authority to implement safety regulations in these buildings.

University police is ready to protect

University Police officers trained with Fresno and Clovis police officers in Active Shooter Training Scenarios on Jan. 11.  Scenarios included an active shooter in a residence hall and a hostage situation in the Atrium Courtyard.

Bloodshed on campus may seem like a very real possibility these days. But the University Police Department wants Fresno State students to know they are in good hands following the Feb. 14 shooting at Northern Illinois University (NIU) that killed six students, including the gunman.
