California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed, a much-maligned fellow in the eyes of many students, is proposing a 5 percent tuition increase for students in the upcoming semester, on top of which would be a 10 percent increase starting fall 2011.

The California State University Board of Trustees today approved a $3.2 billion budget proposal for 2010-11 that includes an $884 million state General Fund increase aimed at "recovering and reinvesting" funding in the CSU. The budget would increase the system's General Fund support to $3.2 billion from its current reduced level of $2.3 billion.

State budget cuts have affected everyone affiliated with the California State University system. Faculty and staff will lose nearly 10 percent of their salaries due to furloughs, and students have seen fee increases of approximately 30 percent in the last year.
