Last day for student voter registration

Students interested in voting in the upcoming election have one last chance to register today.
Associated Students President Juan Pablo Moncayo said the New Voters Project is a state and nationwide push to get college students to vote.
The New Voters Project — a non-partisan voter registration program that focuses on registering college-aged voters — is a part of the Student Public Interest Research Groups.
“This is part of a larger campaign,” Moncayo said. So far the New Voters Project has registered more than 200 students at Fresno State. Moncayo said the overall goal is to register about 1,400 students on campus.
Students can register until the 2 p.m. deadline through clubs or at the tables around campus.
According to Moncayo, the importance of registering more students comes in the power of numbers. Moncayo said lobbyists could use the example of registered students to argue for legislation favoring students.
Moncayo also said higher education should be a priority and that students need to register to vote so they can vote for people who support it.
“If we’re not active then we’re overlooked in our role in society,” Moncayo said.
Esmeralda Santos, an Associated Students senator, agrees. She said it is very important for students to vote, especially those in the CSU system.
“I seriously doubt student fees would be increasing,” Santos said. “It’s hard to advocate for students when they don’t vote,” Santos said. “They need to be heard.”
