'Dogs' loss has feeling of disbelief

Loss to Huskies is unnacceptable

WHAT THE (INSERT PROFANE WORD OF CHOICE HERE) HAPPENED?

No disrespect to Washington, but what in the world were the Huskies even doing in this game? In case you missed it, yes the Bulldogs lost to last year’s PAC-10 cellar dwellers, commonly known as the Washington Huskies. (Also, if you missed the game, you were one of the lucky ones — it wasn’t pretty).

With the loss, Fresno State’s credibility as a giant killer essentially vanishes; as does the fear that any teams may have had prior to their game against the Bulldogs.

Fresno State cornerback Marcus McCauley reacts after dropping what would have been an interception during the Bulldogs’ game against the Washington Huskies.

So now that the playing field is equal among the Bulldogs and any other team who may be looming across the sideline, there is a line that must be drawn.

For the first time since anyone can recall, and likely ever, Fresno State head coach Pat Hill questioned his team’s effort on the field, words that should never be spoken of one’s team, and probably why Hill has never said them before.

One could only imagine the words uttered by Hill following Fresno State’s error-filled game with the Huskies. While were imagining, let’s see what it might look like in print:

‘HOW COULD YOU beep, beep, beep beep, b-beep, beep beep beep, beeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!’
I know, I know, you were thinking the same thing.

All right, we’ve had some time to vent, so let’s look at what lies ahead. For the Bulldogs, this week is a bye for them on gameday, but it’s probably safe to assume that there will be a lot to a whole lot of running in points throughout the week.

Maybe then will the unnamed players that Hill believes didn’t play with 100 percent effort will understand how important playing hard really is. And in case you didn’t know, every time Bulldogs players walk into their locker room, they see a giant sign above the door that simple says, “Play Hard.”

Nothing too complicated there.

Fighting through a duo of Washington defenders, Fresno State’s Paul Williams still found a way to get into the endzone in the first half of the Bulldogs’ loss.

In fact, a few more plays with those adjectives involved probably would have been the difference between a win and a loss; at least that’s what Hill has led us to believe.

We all know the team and its individual players don’t feel good after a loss, but then again, why do the questions of doubt still linger? The post-USC losing streak — why? Nevada’s Robert Hubbard runs for countless yards — how?

Too many questions, too little answers.

In the past, it was always the teams across the field from the Bulldogs that had something to prove. Now it’s Fresno State that has something to prove.

My how the tables have turned.
