The campus run around
10 places every Fresno State student should know
By Morgan Steger

Attention new students —familiarizing yourself with Fresno State’s large campus takes more than a handy pull-out map. You need to know where to find the essentials like food, textbooks and and a place to crash between classes. Here’s a list of hot spots.
1. Advising Services
Don’t wait until you burn through your third potential major to visit Advising Services — get in there at the start of your college career. Need help figuring out what you should major in, what classes to take or whether your AP credits will cancel out that icky science class? Advising Services just might have the answers you need. Doors are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays in Joyal 224 or give them a call 278-1787.
2. Financial Aid
For many college students financial aid is synonymous with food, rent and books. The office is likely to be buzzing for the first few weeks of school as students find out more about Stafford Loans, emergency loans and work study programs. Wondering what kind of assistance you qualify for? Stop by Joyal 296 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays (closed 12-1 p.m.) or call 278-2182.
3. Athletic Ticket Office
Go ‘Dogs! Ready to cheer on your favorite Fresno State athletic teams? Make your way over to the ticket office located at 1600 E. Bulldog Lane (by the football stadium), call 278-DOGS, or surf over to www.gobulldogs.com to find ticket information about your favorite sports team. For many sports, students can grab themselves a free ticket at home games just by presenting a student ID. Ticket office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
4. Student Recreation Center
Avoiding the dreaded “Freshman 15” just got a little easier. With the opening of the new Student Rec Center last spring, Fresno State students now have a state-of-the-art workout facility within walking distance from class. Treadmills, elliptical trainers, free-weights, showers, lockers and indoor basketball and racquetball courts – everything you need to get in shape. Don’t forget your student ID. Hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. The Rec Center is located next to the Save Mart Center at 5010 N. Woodrow Ave.
5. Student Health Center
Need some meds to stop those sniffles, a birth control prescription or a confidential confidant? The student health center offers a wide array of medical services at prices penny-poor college students can afford.
Psychological services are free and many others are low cost. The center, located at 5044 N. Barton Ave., is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 278-2734 for more information.
6. Henry Madden Library
Chances are you haven’t missed the massive construction project going on at the Henry Madden Library.
Don’t fret —--- the library is still open to serve you. There are laptops available, periodicals to peruse and a music library to fulfill all your obscure opera listening needs. Keep in mind that most books are being stored at an off-campus warehouse during the redesign project. Warning to all procrastinators — don’t waltz into the library the morning a project is due and expect to find your books sitting on the shelves, instead order books through the library’s web site at least one day in advance.
Hours Monday to Thursday 7:45-8 p.m., Friday 7:45-5 p.m., closed Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
7. University Student Union
Let’s get down to the essential USU element — grub: Taco Bell, Subway, Panda Express and the Union Snack Bar are all represented. The USU also has a nail salon, banking and postal services, a bowling alley, campus information center and lots of tables, couches and chairs. The USU lounge is open Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
8. Farm Market
Seasonal produce, Fresno State wines, fresh milk, ice cream and meats, the Farm Market carries a wide array of Fresno State grown and processed goodies. The store is located on the corner of Barstow and Chestnut and is open weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
9. University Police
Walking alone to your car at midnight is not the way to cap off a productive on-campus cram session.
Instead call the campus police at 278-2132, escorts are available to see you safely to your vehicle 24-hours-a-day. If you get slapped with a parking ticket and want to pay it while lunching in the Student Union stop by the Campus Police satellite office open in the University Pavilion 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The administrative office is located at 2311 E. Barstow and is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
10. Kennel Bookstore
Textbooks, sweatshirts, snacks, planners, even key chains — the Kennel Bookstore seems to have a little bit of everything. Located next to the Student Union, the bookstore will be packed with students sorting through stacks of textbooks for the first few weeks of class. Extended hours for the week of August 28: 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.
