The United States has the Supreme Court as the ultimate interpreter of the Constitution, and now Fresno State has the first Student Court as the supreme ruler of Associated Students bylaws.
The three Court Justices were inaugurated into their positions last Thursday, making them Fresno State’s first Student Court.
Getting right to work, the Student Court heard two appeals yesterday. Their decision on them will be announced Friday.
Associate Justice Jeremy Carrillo, a criminology major, said he is excited to a member at the beginnings of the court.
“We are truly making history. We’re starting from nothing. We have the opportunity to set the stage,” Carrillo said.
Two more justices will be chosen next semester, making a total of five justices. Those selected by the AS Personnel Committee will be on the Student Court until they complete the program they are in.
Chief Justice D. Lynn Bond and Associate Justice Christopher Storelli both said they want to help AS run more smoothly.
“We want to be a body the student Senate and members of the student body feel comfortable bringing a grievance to,” Bond said.
AS President Jennifer Reimer said the Student Court is meant to be an unbiased voice in AS.
She said the Student Court will help in disputes such as club funding and election procedures.
