Gathering remembers Shee Yang, raises funds for family

A meeting in memory of Shee Yang, a Fresno State student who was killed with his two nieces in a mobile home fire March 19, was relocated Friday because of a larger turnout than organizers expected.

The meeting, organized by Asian Social Work Student Organization to help Yang’s friends find closure in the tragedy, was moved from a small meeting room in the Psychology and Health Science Building to a classroom in the building.

“The turnout made me feel great that there were so many people supporting us,” said Kham Lee, president of the Asian Social Work Student Organization.

Lee said more than 75 people attended the event creating standing room only.

He said his organization hosted the meeting so students who knew Yang would get an opportunity to speak about his memory.

“We did a peer support gathering to help the students find closure,” Lee said.

Lee said the meeting also raised close to $400 in donations to aid the family, which lost all its possessions in the fire.

Yang’s cousin Paula said the family is still accepting donations. Donations can be made in PHS room 128. A Yang Memorial Fund has also been set up at the Bank of the West on Shaw Avenue.

Paula said the family was doing fairly well and are grateful for the support they received from the community, and by the turnout to daily vigils at the site of the burned house on Locan Avenue north of Bullard Avenue.

The weeklong vigil is set to continue every evening from 6 p.m. at the location of the burned mobile home.
