Student court comes to Fresno State

Associated Students is looking to implement the Student Court for the first time. It will serve as a third branch of student government.

Although the AS bylaws have provided for a Student Court since 1999, there has yet to be an active body created.

AS President Jennifer Reimer said she is excited about the possibility of getting the student court started.

“I am excited to see how it will be implemented, and I am looking forward to getting this off the ground and getting more students involved” Reimer said.

The purpose of the Student Court is to interpret the bylaws of AS when there are disagreements between senators or other questions of procedure that need outside judgment.

The Student Court is modeled after the judicial system of California and the federal government. It will consist of five members who will serve pre-designated terms.

The AS Legal Committee is reviewing the section of the bylaws dealing with the student court and will recommended changes to the AS Senate.

In order to create the court, changes to terms of office and the method for appointing justices will need to be considered and approved by the AS Senate.

The Legal Committee is expected to bring more changes to the senate during the next AS meeting to be voted on by the Senate.

Any changes to the AS bylaws must be approved by President Welty before taking effect.
